Thank you for keeping me sane with your journalism.

It is mostly crickets here in Germany when it comes to the NYT piece. Infuriating enough you’d think but no what really made my blood boil today was an article in the left newspaper TAZ.de picking apart Kristof’s article for its shoddy research and calling it a hit piece well timed to take away attention from the report on sex violence committed by Hamas which was published also this week.

Oh and of course all the newspapers reported about the latter one.

I am seriously considering moving to Spain at this point. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Same here in Denmark. We have a single newspaper mentioning the NYT piece about “allegedly sexual abuse” - but as a side note to “the more real story” about Hamas. Seriously! I just can’t… How on earth can we ever trust mainstream media ever again?

pg's avatar

Personally I don’t think I will be able to trust them ever again and I wonder do they realize how much damage they have done?

Sofie Jensen Traulsen's avatar

I know I won’t. And another problem in Denmark is that independent journalism don’t really exists yet. Most journalists are doing their reporting under some corporate platform. That’s a huge problem as I see it, because how the hell can the Danes get to know about all the uncensored or omitted news? I’m curious if it’s the same in Germany?

I'm German, too, it feels like all of the media is on some sort of strong opioid to feel no pain, not having to live in reality. It's killing my sanity.

pg's avatar

Yes and I feel the same way Laura. Trying to avoid any German ‘reporting’ on Gaza and the Westbank as it will be heavily biased not to mention the cesspools that are the comment sections.

Bin echt froh zu wissen, dass es nicht nur mir so geht.

Unfortunately, it is quite similar here.

German media is not that divers and has always self censored/omitted certain viewpoints though not as brazenly as they are doing now. Even the few independent outlets that we have fall in line when it comes to Gaza and the Westbank.

People are driven to get their news from social media. And although there is some great reporting there is also a lot of bs even here on Substack. Which is terrifying because not everyone fact checks what they read or see.

Sofie Jensen Traulsen's avatar

The exact same situation in Denmark. It’s grotesque. Especially since there is a lot of bs on social media as you mention. And another thing in Denmark: Nobody uses Substack. I didn’t know about it until I stumbled upon Zeteo and Jasper. It’s not a thing here. So it’s either mainstream media or Instagram. I feel like we live in the Stone Age here in Denmark when it comes to journalism and disseminating news….

Yeah, same, I came here via Jasper.

Thank you, Jasper, excellent article.

Appreciate the up-front trigger warning on this article. Oof this was a hard one to read.

Earlier today I managed to get through Zachary Foster's new piece where he chronicles cases of sexual violence in 1948.

"…lives up to it's founding ideals..."😶

I haven't finished it yet. Too much in one hit.

I honestly do not know how you handle collecting the facts as you do and report them so ... BANG!... in ones face. And I thank you for it.

excellent reporting.

I've been waiting and waiting for the red line to be crossed. For blind allegiance to Israel to finally crumble... first I thought, bombing a hospital? oh that's so bad, no one does that. but nothing. then, starving civilians? nothing. sniper shots at people running for aid or at children as target practise? still nothing. This information on rape... I don't want to know what is worse than this ...

The term "liberal Zionist" is an oxymoron.

The IDF's war crimes have been live-streamed to the world since October 2023. The language from the Netanyahu administration has been genocidal from Day 1.

Frankly, from decades before 2023.

Those who try to straddle the line between holding liberal, humanist values and supporting an undemocratic Israel are fooling no one but themselves.

The time for honesty and moral clarity about Israel has been obvious for years, but after Kristof's reporting, anyone who still purports to be a liberal Zionist is simply proclaiming that no crime is too horrific to pause their unconditional support for Israel.

What will it take? Ben Gvir has been completely transparent - gleeful at torture - Gaza has been sealed off from journalists from day one - and we are supposed to believe that these horrific photos - Now They Are Also the Flotilla People who have been mounted by dogs, raped by soldiers. Does rapehave to happen to you personally, or someone you love - for you to care about humanity?

Thank you! That was another uncomfortable and necessary read.

On May 15 (Nakhba Day!) a Dutch newspaper published an article, all about the latest 'independent investigation' by an Israeli team, into.... the sexual violence by the Palestinians on October 7th! And they made sure to specify all the sources and material was triple checked, etc. etc. blablabla.

I was baffled and not surprised a bit, all at the same time, that after all the debunking, Israel would revisit this thing, right after the NY Times article. I am reminded of that good old Roy Cohn strategy: don't defend yourself, ATTACK! Seems like hasbara comes out of that same toolbox.
